The problem with GIF images is that they are limited to 256 colours, and (i think) it gets worse when you start doing animations as all the frames have to have the same 256 colours.
PNG images can have 16 million colours, so you will lose a lot of detail when converting to GIF.
GIF animations were never designed for high quality, it's a very old standard.
You'd be much better off using Flash.
