How to 'point to' an element?

Postby thesoundsmith » Fri May 16, 2008 7:57 pm

I'm at the point in my CSS learning curve where I can do most of what i want quicklyand easily - once I have discovered the syntax to direct my rules at. I can literally spend days trying to move an image, or change the font of an anchor. Every time I think I understand, I move to the next element and it starts all over again.

This is totally destroying my enjoyment of creating a newer, CSS-enabled site. Is there ANY app or some technique in WeBuilder that wil;l let me click on an element (say, an <img id="x"...> statement, and have it display the CSS path (not the directory location, but how to manipulate it?) I thought Amaya would help, but it is not ready for prime time and does not really do it either.

Thanks for any ideas you may have.

Nice organ! I'm a proud of owner of an h100 series. looking forward to trying out some of those registrations.

The new site looks great. There isn't really a way to do what you're looking for in webuilder directly. you can use the http://www.getfirebug.com/ firebug plugin to do it while viewing a page in Firefox. Just be sure to assign a keyboard shortcut to "inspect element". then hover your mouse around and you'll see all kinds of css/cascade/html info about the element you're hover over.

Agree on the nice looking new site!
Actually you can see the css code that was used to draw an element in the preview bar partially (this is true only if you use Internet Explorer preview):

It might not be as advanced as the implementation of Firebug, but for simple reference can be handy.

Sorry, I thought I posted this already(?)
Thanks hugely, syrupcore. That was a great tip. I still have questions, but this is a tremendous advance, like GPS over AAA.
What a great too Firebug is!

And if you're coming to Monterey (remember the Aquarium,) let me know, and I'll tell you where I'm gigging in the area.
