Trojan In TrialWare?

Postby robert1 » Mon Sep 08, 2008 9:55 am

Hi - I've just downloaded Screenfactory Enterprise evaluation version (I intend to buy) - the install throws 2 McAfee Trojan removal warnings.

The evaluation copy still works - see the removed files information from McAfee in the links below (your forum would not allow me to insert the images). I see other uses have experienced this issue which is quite concerning.

Could you please provide an update, as I am now unlikely to purchase if I cannot understand this issue. Could it be your exe files have been compromised?

For what it is worth, McAfee displayed the warning while Screenfactory was unpacking a rather suspiciously named file called "keygen.exe"

Regards

Robert

Hello!

This must be a false alarm. Keygen.exe is a part of the Screensaver Factory 4 Enterprise, it allows you to generate registration keys for your screensaver customers (if you use built-in shareware production features). I re-checked the files twice with my anti-virus software, no problems found.

Where did you download the file? If you got it from some other location, i recommend to download from our website. It is the safest way. Also our trial version files are digitally signed, so there should be our company name on the file even if it is downloaded from somewhere else.

Thanks Karlis for the reassurance - I did download it from your site - I also installed it on my laptop which runs ESET/NOD32 anti-virus and that didn't blink an eyelid at it - so it could be McAfee's intolerance (I'm not a McAfee fan at all).

So what about the two temp files that McAfee deleted? (IS-U62Q6.TMP and IS-8SFOE.TMP). That is what it was claiming were the issue and labelled them as PWS.banker.gen.q. Are they connected with keygen.exe as well?

If you can confirm all is OK, I'll be making a purchase as I really like the app (have made the screensaver I wanted for my customers - works perfectly, looks great).

Thanks

Robert

They are the files uncompressed from the setup file, put in a temporary location, ready to be moved and renamed. Your virus software prevented the second phase from happening, so they are just temp files - safe to delete and ignore.

I use Nod32 and so far NO false alarms and NO viruses caught as well. And it is lightning fast and does not install any rubbish.

Yeah I love NOD32 - I run it on my other two machines - like you say it's fast, v small footprint - and it didn't flag anything about the ScreensaverFactory install. Only reason I still run McAfee sh!t on this machine is because the subscription is still active. As soon as it runs out ... of to EST I go. McAfee has caused me sleepless nights in the past (blocking tcp/ip network traffic on certain ports w/o telling me blah blah)

Anyway, we're well off topic now!

To go back on topic, let me tell you I've just bought ScreenSaverFactory Enterprise version ...

Thanks for your support.

Another thumbs up for NOD32 here.
Settled on it after trying loads of other AV software around, top quality software.
