What's the proper size?

Postby paulmc » Thu Jun 08, 2006 3:05 am

What the best size image to get full screen images on most monitors? These are stills, JPEGS. Right now, my images are quite large in file size and the program's ok with this, but what is the optimum size?

I'd probably guess that most people still have a 1024x768 screen resolution. Anything higher/lower, I (think) SF may resize the image, so if the images are 1024 first, they'd look better on these resolutions.
TFTs are getting cheaper and so more common, so higher resolutions will start to take precedance in the next couple of years or so.

If you've only a small number of images, you could reduce them to 800x600 to make a smaller screensaver for those people who only have a low resolution - why download a huge screensaver (the larger the resolution the larger the filesize of the images) if you're not getting the benefit. This means you have to create more than one finished product - may be more work for you though.

Thanks very much for the help. Now, if my first problem gets solved, I am off to the races. :D

Also, are you using compression at all? JPGs can compress down quite well, and with 20% compression, they look like the original, but with a reduced file size.

Most imaging programs will do this, or I'm in the middle of knocking one up myself.

Please excuse my lack of the proper technical terms.

I've created a screensaver on my computer with a "normal" size screen. When I install it on my husband's computer which has a "wide" screen, I don't get the "wide" effect. Can I create screensavers that will work on wide screens? If so, what should the size of the .jpeg be?

The software won't resize the images, so if you create wide images (ie, suitable for a widescreen monitor) then they will appear cropped for 'normal' users.

The only easy workaround is to create two screensavers - one with pictures in the wide ratio (ie, for widescreen) and one that has pics in the 'normal' ratio.

So...

What size should the wide screen be? What X what?

and what size should the "normal" screen be? 600X800?

Slight amendment to my previous post.
Images will get resized within the same ratio (so 800x600 images will get viewed fine of 1024x768 monitors, etc) 800x600 images will just be centred on widesceens with black areas to the left & right. Widescreen images will get cropped on normal screens.

'normal' screens would probably be 800x600 or 1024x768. 1024 resized down to 800 would look better than 800 images resized up to 1024.

Widescreen is 16:9 ratio, so 1024 height is 1024x1.77 so 1812 (so thats a 1812x1024 resolution). Unsure of what 'common' widescreen resolutions are.
