How do I save as scr?

Postby kathyabbott » Thu Aug 30, 2007 9:52 pm

How do I save a file as .scr?

I think I've looked everywhere and can't figure it out.

My web designer says he can't use your other file extension.

I want to post the screensaver on my web site as a free bonus download --

how can I do this? Thanks so much!

Dr. Kathy

What version of what product are you using?
If you're using Screensaver Factory, then from the menu on the left, click 'Create', and from the tabbed options that come up, click the second one, "Create screensaver file". From there, it will create a .scr file for you.

However, getting a user to download a .scr file and install it in the right place is very tricky. Use the third tab to create a setup package (which will be an .exe) which the end user can download and run.

Scr works but exe does not

Postby kathyabbott » Sat Sep 01, 2007 4:18 am

Chris -- you are wonderful!

Thanks!! I got the scr saved correctly.

However, the exe file only installs to my computer, even when I don't want it to.

How do I get around that?

Are there directions for the "tricky" download that I can give to my
customers?

Thanks again!

Sorry - what do you mean by it installs when you don't want it to? From your website, if you browse to the page?
If you download the .exe, you should get a standard "Click next to install, or Cancel to cancel". If you click Next, then yes, it will install it.

As for the 'tricky' customers - download the .scr and place in your Windows directory. Thats it. Windows should do the rest.

Downloading the scr file

Postby kathyabbott » Sun Sep 02, 2007 12:10 am

Thanks - sorry for being vague.

New question: If I post the .scr file on my website, will folks be able to download it the way you described?

Thanks again. Version: SCF Pro 4

You need to post the .exe, not the .scr on your website. Most browsers will save the .scr in some weird place, and then ask the user if they want to open it, when its finished downloading. Unfortunately, this isn't too helpful for .scr files. Even with instructions, its confusing for users to have to open their Windows directory to add files. Additionally, on some installs of Windows, the Windows directory is hidden, so users don't have direct access to it anyway.

Upload the .exe, and let the installer do its business for you.
