Snippets via Callwords via CTRL+J

Post by syrupcore »

Who is making good use of this sweet new feature? How so?

If you're not using it, why not? :)

Don't be shy.

Never used them before, but just found out what it is, so I think I'm going to set some up right now...

In fact, I must make more use of the library all together, I've neglected it!

New feature? I've still got WeBuilder 2006 installed, and that uses snippets with CTRL J...

huh?

In the new version, you can type, for instance "form" then hit ctrl+J to print out your form snippet. "Callwords" they're called. So in 2006, you can assign any old shortcut to a snippet. in 2008, you can assign a shortcut and a callword. If you type the callword and then hit ctrl+J, you get snippet. Essentially freeing up your snippets library from taking over all of your keyboard shortcuts. It's really pretty sweet. Only thing I'm not fond of is Ctrl+J is totally unnatural feeling, still. I want it to be "TAB" or "CTRL+ENTER" or something more "in the flow".

Also, I just noticed this in the help file:
2) The following snippet allows you to insert custom option element:
<option value="%[Enter ID]%">%[Enter ID]%</option>
When inserting this snippet you are prompted to Enter ID just once, as value for the second replacement token is read from your first response on the prompt.
They add features and don't tell anyone. Sneaky devils.

Aah, gotcha. Now if you had said, "Who uses callwords with CTRL J", that would have made more sense! ;)
Indeed - a handy feature. Its just remembering what you used as 'callwords' though, and not getting annoyed when CTRL J doesn't work, as you've typed the word wrong (which happens to me when I use the similar feature in Firefox)

good point! Updated. :)

Most of the ones I'm using so far are pretty easy to remember. form, form+, form++ for different size form snippets. ul for, well, a ul with an li. style for a style block. script for a script tag.... lorem for a block of lorem ipsum text. lorem+ for 3 paragraphs worth. that sorta stuff. Mostly the name of the actual tag.

Makes sense. Quite a powerful feature when you start using it, and realise its potential.
Ages ago someone mentioned setting up a Wiki to share these sorts of 'tips' to get the best out of Webuilder and the other applications - these features are tucked away in there, but I'm sure there are a good number of people out there who don't realise just what they can do. In the short term, a 'tips' forum would be beneficial. Hmmm...

Just noticed a really nice addition to the feature. If you hit ctrl+J at any time (or when you mistype a callword ;), a little list comes up showing you all of your callworded snippets. A very nice detail. Go Blumentals.

Well, I do not know who that was , but we do have intention to implement some kind of "HANDY TIPS"? section in our knowledge base, so users can benefit from features not easily to be discovered.
It could be structured like here: http://kb.blumentals.net/kb/index.php?CategoryID=8
