WeBuilder 9.0.0.96 and new router (ftp conn. problems)

Post by EvilBMP »

Hi,

I bought a new router for my new home network. After configuring the WAN connection I tried to establish a ftp connection from WeBuilder through my new router with the result of an error message... :(

Message:

FTP Error: I won't open a connection to 192.168.1.1 (only to xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx)

-> xxx is my current wan ip address

Sometimes also another message appears (depends on the selected ftp connection):

FTP Error: Illegal PORT command

Any idea, why I can't connect to any ftp on my list? I want to use WeBuilder again like without any router :(

Greets Evil

btw: I am using a SMCWGBR14-N as router ... maybe somebody else too :?:

Obvious question - can you use another FTP client (such as FileZilla) successfully? If it was working fine before, you've changed router, and now it doesn't work, logic would suggest the router is the problem. ;)

Try setting the "Use Passive mode" option enabled in your FTP settings.

Make sure if the built-in firewall in the router is enabled that you allow access to port 21. Some routers close every port except the standard ones 'out of the box' so 21 must be opened. As suggested, if you have any other ftp software try that and see. Makse sure passive mode is selected (project FTP Options dialog) and that 'Direct Connection' is set (no proxy).

You can see what ports are open by going here and trying the 'shields up' test (just keep cliking the 'Shields Up' links until you find it). It isn't conclusive, but is good fun and shows how secure your system is as well. You can choose to scan a specific port to see it is is open and accepting traffic.

Other than that, as Chris said, it is obviously the router causing the trouble so we just have to figure out how to configure it for WB access.

@chrisjlocke

yes, FlashFXP is working... in normal and in passive mode

@davenz

built-in firewall doesn't block the transfer, even in DMZ mode I got no connection...

but with ftp passive mode it's working! :)

BUT!!! Why are this transfer options hidden in Project Window (i don't use projects) ... so I have to click on "New" Button and then have to click on "Select" for FTP Directory AND THEN in the Browse FTP I have the small "Options" Button where I can enable/disable Passive Mode!
OK, a shorter Mode would be to use the "Save to FTP" Button and then go to this options dialog - BUT why are these settings not available in the normal settings dialog... :?:

For sure, I was searching for such settings, cause I know that you often have to use passive mode behind routers! This should be definitely fixed in one of the next versions. Sorry, but this is obviously not user friendly. :evil:

Thank you all for your help - and sorry for my late reply...

Good that you got it going. I find the whole FTP part of WeBuilder lacking, certainly way behind some other web dev apps that have a more traditional two-pane local/remote type setup. That said I really like (and use all the time) the right click 'upload' feature so for me it is enough. For any 'real' ftp work I use CuteFTP Pro, which I have used for years.

It would be sufficient, if this (FTP-)Options Button is available in the "Connections Settings" Window. That would be an improvement of usability... :wink:

Having any options outside the 'Options' screen does sound a rather inefficient and complicated way of doing things. Handy to know though...
(I don't use the FTP side of WeBuilder at all)

Given how many users have routers that won't open an incoming port for FTP transfers, Passive mode should be the default for FTP nowadays (any client - not just WebBuilder). There are very few servers that do not support it and for the few don't, if the PASV command fails the client can fall back to a regular FTP transfer connection.

Options indeed is in the wrong place. Must update, I agree!
