Save settings

Post by kAlvaro »

I installed the 30-usages demo of Rapid PHP 2008 (v9.5.1.105) early this morning. I spent a while customizing the settings and I used the editor to work on a PHP app for a couple of hours.

Then, I needed to find a file in a quite large directory tree so I hit "Find in Files" and started searching. This search takes 15 seconds in my current editor, but you get a list of items as soon as they're found and you can use the editor while the search is in progress. However, Rapid PHP would not respond. I waited for ten minutes but I had to keep on working so I killed to task.

To my surprise, I got the "first time launch" assistant when I restarted the program (together with a "29 uses left" notice). Almost of my settings had been lost: colours, editor options, recent files list... Only a named layout I saved was left.

I looks like settings are not stored until you close the program. Is it a known limitation of the software or is there anything wrong with my setup? I'm using the Spanish version of Windows XP Professional SP3. My user has local admin priviledges.

If I close the program every time I change a setting my evaluation period will expire today...

Indeed most settings are saved upon exit, actually it is not expected that the program will crash on the run when you change setings and in 99.99% or better of cases I believe it does not. With the find in files you must be careful to exclude any binary and huge log files as by defualt the program will look into all files (not only text files) and it can take a lot of time factoring in that there is still a plenty of space for performance improvements for the search algorithm.

And I believe there is nothing wrong with your system ;)

If your trial runs out, you can get WeBuilder which is pretty much the same thing as Rapid PHP, so you will be able to trial once more.

Alright, I'll no longer worry about my computer, he he. Anyway, not saving settings when I hit "OK" is something that makes me feel nervous, esp. if you consider that I sometimes keep my coding tools open for several days (thanks to Windows hibernation feature). It's like editing a document in a word processor: it won't crash in 99.99% of the cases yet I hit "Save" on every paragraph.

I suppose there's a technical reason to enqueue settings but you should consider some refactoring in future versions.

P.S. I definitively agree: there's a lot of room for improvement in the search algorithm.
