Better Tabbed Workspace

Post by ringoffire »

OK, one last idea for the day.

Currently, the main interface uses docking windows for general layout. It can be improved. It is just for the eyes and do not add extra functionality, only clears the interface a bit more.

I did some "Photoshopping" to describe the idea.

GUI of MS Visual Studio 2005/2008 Express is inspiring, as well.

The perfection would be:
Fully customizable docking panes like in VS2005/2008.. 8)

+1. Small but very welcome correction.

Yep, me too, or at least the option to add dynamic spacers (like Opera's toolbar/interface options) to pad things out to where an individual might want them.

Looks great ringoffire! I do like having the file tabs over/under the actual coding/preview section. The way they are currently off to the left is sort of 'out of place'. Would also like tab color to reflect save status of file but I suspect that's been suggested.

I'd insist again, a real tabbed workspace with colored tabs would be great...

It would be better if the tabs were displayed on top of editing area, as usual in almost all other editors.

You can drag&drop the tabbar to a point above the editing area.

I've been using Rapid PHP for a little over two years now and the most important change I'd make to the Tab interface would be :

1. to eliminate the need to scroll horizontally when I have several files open. From my Delphi days, I remember that the tab interface offered the option to wrap when they reached their containing width -- kind of like a tab 'word wrap' function. This should be an easy option to implement.

2. I'd like to see the tab colors such that they offer more contrast to their surrounding environment. Between the Windows Tool/Task bar at their bottom and the Code, Preview, and the Splits tabs on top, they kind of get lost in the noise.
