Lost associated file icons

Post by garethjmsaunders »

For some reason all the WeBuilder 2006 associated files (CSS, JS, PHP, etc.) have lost their WeBuilder Document icon, and I can't work out why or how to get them back. I'm left with the default icon for an unknown file.

I've tried to change this via My Computer > Tools > Folder Options ... and changing this within File Types. No success.

I've tried to Repair icon cache in TweakUI. No success.

I've tried to re-associate the files in WeBuilder. No success.

The files DO open in WeBuilder when you double-click them, it's just that the icons don't show. Oddly I can change them for other file types.

I'm using Windows XP Pro (with latest updates installed).

Any ideas? It's really annoying.

Panic over

Post by garethjmsaunders »

Panic over! I've fixed the problem by uninstalling WeBuilder 2006, rebooting, running Registry Mechanic 5.0, Rebooting again, then Reinstalling WeBuilder 2006.

Whatever the matter was that's fixed it all. Odd that it was only WeBuilder-related files, apart from XML (which was the only one to be working). Hmmm...

Knowing Windows, there could be many reasons for this... it is good that everything is ok now ;)

I've just run into the same problem with RapidPHP 2006. I had installed Dreamweaver, which "stole" the associations for css, php and php3 files, and then uninstalled it. The icons for those filetypes are now blank.

I've tried the steps the previous poster did to fix the problem, but it doesn't work for me.

I've tried manually setting the files through the Explorer Tools > Folder Options > Filetypes menu, and although the correct values are set (and the correct file icon is previewed in the setting) the files stay "blank".

I've deleted Windows' icon cache file, tried TweakUI's Icon Repair, and run registry mechanic. I've even deleted (manually) all references to RapidPHP and those file extensions, and still no go.

If I uninstall RapidPHP, I can manually set the icons to something else, but on installing RapidPHP again, it breaks.

Help!

In the file types dialog, when you view (for example) css files, does it show the right icon there?

What if you change the icon to something like Notepad.exe, check that works, then back to RapidPHP?

It doesn't show the correct icon in the file types dialogue, no.

It doesn't matter what I change it to - if RapidPHP is installed, the icon stays blank. Uninstall RapidPHP and I can change it to whatever I want, and associate it with whatever program I want. Reinstall RapidPHP, and the icons keep their association, but lose their icon.

The installation routine might change the association / icon, but you should be able to change it afterwards. I'll have to try it on a test machine.
What is your operating system?

Could you try changing the icon of a file thats not working (eg, css files) to the Notepad icon, and confirm it doesn't 'stick'. It should change - does it go blank when RapidPHP is run? I know you said it'll go blank if you reinstall RapidPHP, but obviously you don't need to reinstall it anymore.

Sorry to be annoying and ask for the same things all the time. :(

I have sorted it!

Here's what I had to do:

1) Make a copy of the icons.dll file in the RapidPHP folder.
2) Uninstall RapidPHP (which would delete the dll - which is why I needed a copy)
3) Put dll back where it should be.
4) Open filetypes dialogue.
5) Delete .css, .php and .php3
6) Recreate them, with no association, but set the icon correctly.
7) Reinstall RapidPHP, and associate it with those files.

How bizarre.

Indeed. Glad you got it working. Wonder why that happened then... :?

Lets have a check of your association settings.

Open Regedit. Click on 'HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT'.
Export this by clicking 'File' -> 'Export'
Enter a filename, and click OK.

Zip it up, and lob it my way:

Ta!

After another reboot and some more fiddling, it is working again. If it happens again, I'll send you the reg file. Thanks!
