If I buy a v. 2018 license, will it also work on v. 2016? I like that interface better and I have not yet found functional improvements in the 2018 version that are of use to me.
2018 license valid for 2016 version as well?

Each major version of the editor has its own license key. You cannot activate version 2016 with the license key from version 2018 and vice versa.
