I tried setting a background color for all PHP elements under "HTML with PHP". It works and PHP elements show the background color, except tabs. Spaces have the background color applied unless they are following a tab.

this is not possible That's unfortunate. There are many editors that have accomplished this impossible request, I was just hoping yours was one of them. It's hard to find an editor that has all the basic needs of a full-time web programmer, yours is very close though. I'll just put this on my list ...
