I see there is an an option for setting for "file backups" ( Preferences > Files >Backups) . If you set this location will all your file backups go to that one location?
Is it possible to set a backup location folder for each project? I would hundreds of backup files from many projects stored in the one location, all mixed up. it would be helpful if you could set a backup location for each project? Maybe you can already do this and I have missed somthing? any advice - many thanks.

It is possible to set the backup location to a particula folder, please see Preferences.
