WeBuilder2008 9.0.0.97 Can't ftp

Post by trishahdee »

I loved WeBuilder2007 and how I could ftp from the program. When I upgraded to We2008 9.0.0.96 I lost the ability to ftp. So I just used another program. Now I've upgraded to 9.0.0.97 and I am having the same problem.

When I click the icon "Publish to FTP" I get the choose graphics list, then it goes to the login screen where I can double-click on the location I want to open. That all works fine. I can double-click, We2008 logs on to the server. I can move around the server folders, go into them and back out, so I know I'm connected. But when I try to upload there is no delay between clicking that button and We2008 reverting back to the workspace screen. When I go and check (via web or another ftp program) the version/date/time of the file has not changed.

At this point I can ftp to the server with another ftp client and update the file. I can then go back into We2008 ftp area, log on and see that the file has changed.

I have 3 different servers I have sites hosted on and I have the same problem with all three servers.

What gives? And how do I fix it?

FYI: I have made sure my ZoneAlarm firewall has given We2008 access to upload.

Can you try disabling ZoneAalarm temporarily and see if WB08 transfers files? While port 21 has to be open for standard FTP traffic, there are many other network queries using various ports going on at the same time in the background and some may be needed to successfully transfer files with the built-in FTP client.

Maybe not related but yesterday, my daughter didn't have any access to internet at all. Zone alarm was the reason. After disabling it, went to ZA site and they have a new version because the last microsoft update (at least for XP) was in conflict and no internet access was allowed.

Check this: http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/ ... Issue.html

These were good suggestions and I did update my ZoneAlarm and it is now working fine.

I have done more experimenting and I have found out that when I use the publish to ftp button and if I check say the stylesheet and a graphic in the "upload linked files" window, these files are indeed uploaded. I can tell by the time on the files when I go in with another ftp client. BUT, when I try to only upload the stylesheet (not checking it in the "upload linked files" but trying to upload it on it's own) it will not upload.

And, what is really strange, is when I am logged into my site through the publish to ftp button, before I try to upload the html file, I can delete files from the server but I still can not upload an individual document from inside We2008 ftp.

Since I am able to upload linked files but not the main html document that leads me to believe there is something other than ZoneAlarm causing the problem.

And just to be very thorough, I tried the same procedure with two different servers. One in Arizona and one in Canada with the same results.

Where do we go from here?

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Try changing to Passive mode within the project ftp settings/options and see if that makes any difference; most servers prefer passive mode for some reason.

Also, have you made any changes to the Transfer Modes? If you can transfer one file you should be able to transfer multiple files and vice versa. My feeling is the problem is still ZoneAlarm. I haven't used it for a long time but I don't think there is a way to disable it, only lower the security settings. You can try adding the exe file to the processes list and the ports to the ports list but it would be better to uninstall it and see if it all works then. If it makes no difference, you can always reinstall it; all you have lost is a few minutes of time. I am a tech and recommend my clients don't use third-party firewalls for this very reason. The fact is you just don't need one unless you are using an operating system that doesn't have one already built in.

Just my opinion

It can be argued that the 'firewall' in XP is pretty basic though, and does not monitor or block outbound traffic. While most would agree that a primary role of a firewall is to simply deny unauthorized traffic from entering the system or network, personal firewalls also generally monitor how programs interact with the operating system and which programs attempt to initiate outbound network or Internet communications and either alert the user or block the traffic when suspicious activity occurs. This can be helpful in thwarting many types of malware attacks that may attempt to open ports or communicate with outside servers without the user's knowledge or consent.

... but thats dragging this topic off topic! ;)

Well, yes, but at the risk of going off topic my reasoning is that users don't need to know every time a packet gets dropped or some other normal network event happens. Firewall software makers regularly use scare-mongering marketing to overstate the risks involved and make people paranoid by misinforming them that a 'hacking attack' is taking place when it obviously isn't. I get calls every day from people believing they are being 'hacked' or that something is dreadfully wrong because of the ridiculous alerts they receive.

I agree in some cases firewalls are necessary, but a home user behind a router with good antispyware (www.superantispyware.com) and good antivirus (free.grisoft.com, www.avast.com, free-av.com) who don't go to high-risk sites have nothing to worry about, at least not enough to warrant a firewall.

Just my 2 cents and I promise not to add to this topic any more!

Sorry it's taken me a few days to get back to you. Got involved in a project... anyway..

Passive mode does not make any difference.

I have given We2008 all permissions in ZoneAlarm and still the same problem. It will upload associated files but not the main file.

I do not know what ports We2008 uses so I can't tell ZA about that. Unless you know which ones they are?

My computer gets attached a lot. I know you may think this is rediculous but I really do and since I started using ZA the number of virus, bugs, crap have greatly reduced to essentially nothing. I never turn ZA off when I am online! But just to satisfy you, for the first time in literally years, I did shut it down for a minute and went through the process of trying to upload an html doc to a site and it still didn't upload. It is not a ZA problem.

What would our next step be?

The fact that you can upload some files but not others would either indicate a program error (but detailed logs showing whats going on would be handy) or a permissions problem.

It would be useful if you could delete or rename the existing files on the server, so when you go to publish / upload, there is no existing file there already. Maybe WB can't delete the file properly? I'm only clutching at straws. Its worth a go...

If the passive mode does not help, please write a detailed report and include (1. your login credentials, 2. click-by-click sequence of steps to repeat the problem, 3. details on which files are we allowed to mess with in order to test this) and send this to support[at]blumentals.net

I have the same problem with "Publish to FTP" but "Save to FTP" works as expected. No firewall tried passive mode with no success. Don't mean to hijack this thread, but I'm going to send login details etc.

Actually, this is regarding RapidPHP 9.0.0.97 I'm having the same problem as btimms in that Publish to FTP doesn't work, but Save to FTP does (but this is occurring in RapidPHP 2008, not WeBuilder2008). FTP is set to passive mode. I just upgraded from RapidPHP 8, in which both FTP functions worked. I have an FTP program with which I can check results and see exactly the same problems as cited above. One function works, the other doesn't. I also just checked, and in the previous version, both functions do work.

Hi btimms and islandwriter.
If you can follow Karlis' steps in the post above yours, that would be handy. If you could acknowledge here that you've done that, that would be helpful too.

Thanks!

Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this issue. It seems to be affecting a number of people. Thankfully its not a complete show-stopper, and there is a 'workaround' (well, of sorts...)

I sent a PM to Karlis with my results and site info and he did acknowledge that it appeared to be a bug. There are plenty of workarounds and alternatives that I have been using before taking a look a WB. But the "one click" Publish is a tremendous convenience,
