Upgrade Questions

Post by Tofudisan »

I've recently started a new job and we use WeBuilder 2006 (v. 7.0.0.62) here. I've noticed a couple glitches (more annoyances than anything) so I looked at the site to see about the new version. Coming from an older version I have several questions now.

1. What significant changes are there from version 7 to version 9? I looked through the announcements and I didn't see anything other than bug fixes. Granted I skimmed through the announcements so I could have missed details. But what would constitute the version changes that would make me want to update my version?

2. If I do update my version is there a difference in functionality between the standard vs. commercial software? Do they function identically Or is it just a licensing difference? Which license would I be under if I went the upgrade route vs. the direct-buy route?

3. Are there any known problems going from v7 directly to v9 via the upgrade?

I tried searching through the forums before posting these questions so if I've asked questions that others have already answered please excuse me. I must not be wording my search criteria very well. :)

These dudes are not that good at touting their accomplishments. They'd rather code than talk about what they've done. They do a lot though! Off the top of my head, some changes between 7 and 9...

php debugger
ruby/eruby support
callwords for snippets
FTP overhaul
SQL explorer
code collapse
vertical selections (block select)
searchable keyboard shortcuts
repeatable snippet tokens
usb stick installs

man, a lot. I dunno.

I don't know of any issues with going from 7 to 9. You can download a demo of 9 to see if it floats your boat.

Go through the announcements once more and carefully, e.g. here:
http://forums.blumentals.net/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=2886

You can see a lot of "Added"

2. If I do update my version is there a difference in functionality between the standard vs. commercial software? Do they function identically Or is it just a licensing difference? Which license would I be under if I went the upgrade route vs. the direct-buy route?

No there is no functional limits. Only legal limits to use the software. Upgrade ensures you get the commercial license. There is no Personal upgrade option.

3. Are there any known problems going from v7 directly to v9 via the upgrade?

Not known ones. There might be some difficulties with transferring settings because the settings export is usually designed to work from the previous version. .g. 7 to 8 and 8 to 9, but you should be able to retain 90% of your settings the old way anyways.

Thanks for the response! Sorry that I didn't see the added features list. Seemed like every post I went through was bug fixes. Looks like a nice feature set has been added.

Off to upgrade! :D
