Firefox render php html
Using WeBuilder 2008 ver 9.2 on WinXP SP3 Firefox 3.0.4 PHP ver 5.2.6
I have the EXACT same file saved as HTML and PHP. There is a link to a CSS file. It renders perfectly in HTML showing ALL of the CSS features but does not show ANY of the CSS features in the PHP file. IE works fine rendering the HTML and PHP files.
I have used this to show that something is wrong with WeBuilder. How do I fix this?

I knew whatever amount of info I provided would not be enough to get any help on this forum. OK here goes the first installment of twenty questions.

Re: Firefox render php html
I am looking for help, but I will not respond to EGOMAN. If someone could read this thread and see that there is a serious problem with my WeBuilder and that I have provided a lot of information at the very beginning.
Please someone from Blumentals and/or someone with the desire to help for the sake of helping and not to add to their posting count please read my original post.
Thanks.

Re: Firefox render php html
Will would have helped (as he's helped countless others) but your 'would not be enough to get any help [here]' comment did come across quite negative.
But anyway. I created a .php file and its rendered the CSS fine.

I don't think the built-in server creates any logs, so its not going to shed any light as to why its not finding the file.
Try (as a test) putting the .php and .css in the same directory, and seeing if they can see each other (like my test).
I don't know your level of expertise, so don't take it the wrong way, but I assume you've got the class defined in the .css and .php in the same case - ie, both lowercase, etc.

Re: Firefox render php html
I will conform to the rules in the future. I know that I don't know, that is why I am looking/asking for help. thanks for answering me after my being blackballed. I was/am frustrated with this and am looking forward to getting this sample page completed so that I may apply the CSS path properly on my own pages.
My original post stated that:
All of this is taken from PHP Solutions By David Powers (another Brit by the way Chris) chap 4. I don't know if my paths are wrong or if the WinXP-FireFox-WeBuilder triple threat is out to get me!
I am now trying to create a file with everything in the single file, which is rendering OK on the website. Will then put individual parts into separate CSS and includes individually to find a hangup and then attempt to find the solution.
My frustration was with the problem not Will, but I rather would have had an offer of help then given what all info I had worked at supplying. Thanks anyway for looking at this.
My original post stated that:
This just adds to my confusion. If it works as expected in HTML and works as expected in IE why not in FireFox. I don't see how I can narrow it down to a WeBuilder problem or a FireFox problem yet. There are still too many anomalies left.I have the EXACT same file saved as HTML and PHP. There is a link to a CSS file. Re: Firefox render php html
perhaps if I'd inserted "yes, that is weird. sorry I don't know the answer to your question but maybe the answers to these questions will shed some light:" between my "hi" and my questions, you would have reacted differently. really though man, I'm not paid to help out around here so...
anyway, the reason I was asking pathing questions is that IE would likely be more forgiving of c:\system paths\ then firefox.
Did you try Chris' suggestion of putting the html, php and css files all in the same folder? This should remove the pathing questions entirely as you don't need to use paths at all when calling the css file.
good luck,
egoman

Re: Firefox render php html
Again, Will was trying to help, and needed more info to begin looking at where the problem lies. Without having the files in front of you, its hard to know where to get someone else to look. Unsure why you resorted to the 'egoman' comment. There are no 'rules' here, apart from 'play nice!'
We're here to help you, thats all.
How complicated is the CSS? IE is a lot more tolerant of mistakes in CSS than Firefox is.
Have you tried my example I posted above? If you can confirm that works, then we can rule out any issues with WeBuilder, and it must lie in your code. If you can't get the test above working, then the code is irrelevant and something else is afoot.
The HTML is self explanatory, and the CSS file just contains .test { color: red;}
If the above does work, stick the .css file in a directory one down from the .php file (so if the .php file lives in c:\code, stick the .css file in c:\code\css) and test it again (obviously changing the link in the .php file...)

Re: Firefox render php html
Right now I have changed the path to use
This has gotten me the included files properly on the web site but not in the WeBuilder internal server. There I am getting all kinds of error messages because WeBuilder shows the root as F:\ which is far from the correct path. Several subfolders before the link path being used.
I have also reentered the link for the CSS and then added a more complete path (..\) to get the image file in the CSS body section to render.
It is obvious my misunderstanding of setting paths for the includes and the CSS link ref that has been my problem all along. I do not know how to get both the web site DOCUMENT_ROOT and the WeBuilder paths to be happy in the same file that can be used on both servers. IF you understand what I am saying please offer whatever advice you can to clarify for me.
Thanks.
Code: Select all
include($_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].

Re: Firefox render php html
Relative links are the best ones to use. Links in the .css file should be relative to the .css file, and not to the .php file.
I tend to use a root directory, and two additional directories:
| root
|...|
|...+-- styles
|
|...+-- images
the .htm (or .php) links to the .css file via 'styles/style.css' (or whatever) and the links in the .css point to images via '../images/image.jpg' (or whatever).
Hope that makes sense.
Again, I've just tested the above and works fine. If you want to email me your files, maybe that could help?

Re: Firefox render php html
I would be glad to send you the files I am using. Tell me where to send them. They are from the book PHP solutions by David Powers.
I am somewhat familiar with "Relative links" as you say, but entering this line:
into a PHP file and running it on the WeBuilder built in server shows F:\. How do I correlate that with a normal path on the web server so that the same file can be used on both for local development and uploading to the server?

Code: Select all
echo 'Supported. The server root is '.$_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'];

Re: Firefox render php html
Feel free to send the files to blumentals@chrisjlocke.co.uk
Lets assume your .php file live in a directory called 'Bill'. Under 'Bill' is a directory called 'assets'. Thats where the .css file lives.
In your .php file, you should just need <link href="assets/journey.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen" />
There shouldn't be any reason why that doesn't work. If your .css file uses images in the same 'assets' directory, the links will have to be relative to the .php file, so for example:
.test { background-image: url(assets/background.gif); }
If tested this setup this end, and it appears to work fine.

Hi Chris,
Have you had a chance to look at the files I sent to you?

Re: Firefox render php html
I've got the .jpgs and .css, but no .php to 'glue' them all together.
And if you could just confirm the directory structure and placement of files. I presume the .jpgs are in a directory called 'images', and the .css in 'assets', right? the .php lives in the directory above these?
If so, then I've created it fine. I presume the .php file has been saved in the same directory as the working .html file?
