Can't FTP

Post by PARoss »

Weird. Suddenly I can't FTP with Webuilder or Filezilla. I made no changes that I'm aware of. Webuilder gives me this error:

FTP Error: Socket Error #10054 Connection Reset by Peer.

How do I fix this?

Hi,

please take a look here:
http://www.langwald-edv.net/cadia/forum ... PIC_ID=744

The translation:
The error message means that the other side did not respond or has broken the connection, so check the settings for FTP or email, whichever is chosen.
1. Internet connection is not open when you run cadiaIP
2. Firewall settings for CadiaIP details CadiaIP release for the use of the Internet and possibly the need for FTP or email process.

I hope it was helpful.

ciao Günter

Gunter, thanks for trying, but the link is in German, and the translation is over my head.

Like guenter said, it is a problem with your server.

Yes it has be a problem with your server if it is affecting both WeBuilder & Filezilla.
Basically the server is closing the FTP connection for some reason.

Best to ask your hosting provider.

I have discovered that it is the firewall. When I turn it off, it works. But both Webuilder and Filezilla are selected as exceptions -- and I did nothing to change this! So, how do I fix it. Currently, I have to turn off the firewall to FTP.

Maybe you can create a special rule for these programs or put them on a white-list.

For this we need to know which firewall you're using.

Capricorn,

The damnable thing is that I know all of that, and have Webuilder listed as an exception. But something is stopping the FTP (and with Filezilla also, which is also listed as an exception). I'm at a loss about what to do. But when I disable the firewall, I can FTP.

I notice that Microsoft SQL Server 2005 was recently installed. What does this do? I don't think I installed it, but I had some difficulty with a recent Windows update. Some of the updates didn't install, so I went to the Windows update website and installed what it recommended. Why do I need this program? Could it be the culprit?

Ok. let's try this

I am making the assumption that you are using XP as you have not mentioned which OS you are using.

1. get a utility called CCleaner, it is a freeware and excellent one to have.(btw, CCleaner stands for 'Crap Cleaner')
2. make sure that your environment variables are correctly set to the right directory location.
windows by default uses the /windows/temp directory...I recommend that you first create, if not present, a temp directory under the C drive then change the location of the temp and tmp variable location to that newly created temp directory; I would also move my internet temp directory to
that and also my cookies location. do this for all browsers that you have on your PC. make sure also that you set it large enough for downloads to run
3. run CCleaner
4. defrag your system and also run a registry defrag usually done view a boot-defrag. why? NTFS is a highly fragmentary creature and can play havoc. I
recommend that you defrag IF it tells you that fragmentation is >2%. If you use your system alot then use CCleaner and defrag once a week otherwise
do it as needed
5. since ftp uses by default port 21 then create an exception in your firewall for that port. Here again I am making an assumption that you are using the
windows firewall. you failed to mention this
6. did you check with the resources that you had (ie) the internet and performed a process called "Googlize"? IF you ask the question right then you will obtain
adequate information. In your case enter the following in the Google input "FTP Error: Socket Error #10054 Connection Reset by Peer"
7. IF it is possible can you post the exception error that you receive. Once I have this information then I can tell you exactly the issue
BUT here again, you can perform a 'Googlize'...there is also a diagnostic program available from Microsoft that will give you definitive answers to exception
errors
(8. you can really go nuts, if so inclined and IF you have adequate RAM installed create a RAM drive and place all of your temp, tmp, internet temporary files,
cookies, default browsers' cache locations, etc. to the RAM drive, if so then you'll get a marked improvement of the overall performance of your system
perhaps much of the above you are familiar with and have done so, I am not sure. BUT I would only do this IF you have sufficient knowledge and understand
the pitfalls that come with it namely large file downloads may be limited..the secret is to have adequate RAM installed. I have as an example on my system
a 2gb drive.)

If you need more help etc, feel free to PM me. Gee, now Pandora's box is opened
