Run error Entry point not found

Post by bluedreamer »

Version: WeBuilder11

Hi, thank you for HTML5 support in WeBuilder 11, but I have an error whenever I load WeBuilder (Win XP). This is on a fresh install.

webuild.exe - Entry point not found
The procedure entry point ConvertToGlobalHandle could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll

Any ideas?

Obvious question, but have you uninstalled and reinstalled WeBuilder?
What version of XP - with Sp2?

Hi Chris

XP SP3, did a straight install without uninstalling older versions, I still have older versions going back to 2006! :)

@bluedreamer

This error is typically associated with a program trying to use a certain version of a dll or other system file and finding the wrong one instead. The error mentions kernel32.dll, which is one of the core Windows system files usually shared among many other applications. It may be that 2011 ships with or relies on a certain version of the file and it isn't finding that version on your machine for some reason. All I can suggest is reinstalling the software, disabling any AV or anti-malware software that may prevent system files from being replaced/installed/updated properly.

The developers may have some idea of why this happens; they've likely seen it before in some form or another.

Keep us posted if you do fix it because others will benefit as well.

Can other Windows XP users confirm this? Tried it on XP SP2, no problems.

Thanks everyone...

I uninstalled all older versions to start with a clean sheet, disabled AV etc and reinstalled but still get the same error. WeBuilder works fine after the dialog box is OK'd :)

So if you find KERNEL32.dll in c:\windows\system32, right click it and select 'Properties', then click the 'Version' tab, what version does it give you?
If you download/install the trial version of RapidPHP, does this give the same error? (its based on the same code base, so would be interesting to see...)
I presume other programs are all OK. Might be worth running a chkdsk, just in case? Yell if you don't know how to do that.

CHKDSK reported no errors.
Installing RapidPHP brings up the same error, also installed a few other apps, none of which bring uo the error

I doubt if checkdisk would have anything to do with this error. What version of Internet Explorer do you have installed? When you disable the AV software, is it really disabled? Are all the services stopped and not just the resident shield type monitoring? Most AV programs do not totally disengage when you 'turn them off'. I'd be tempted to uninstall everything in order to have a completely clean copy of Windows, then make sure I had the latest supported version of Internet Explorer and try installing it then. It makes no sense that it doesn't work on your XP box when others here are running it successfully. To me that says there is something on your installation that is causing the problem, we just have to nail down what it is. I doubt a device driver would cause that error so it must be something that has modified system files, or is preventing system files from being accessed or modified. The only thing I can suggest removing any or all anti malware, spyware or virus software and anything third-party that plugs into Internet Explorer, like a search toolbar or ad-blocker or similar. At this point I'd be looking at anything possibly causing the problem, however unlikely it sounds.

@davenz - thanks for the ideas.

I've been through all the regular things such as disabling AV etc (completely!), and I only use IE for development previewing but still no go. You're probably right in saying it' may be some 3rd party software and it's time for an OS reinstall, though I have been thinking it's about time I got updated to Win7 so maybe the universe is telling me something!

Hi bluedreamer, it is always nice to upgrade and make a nice clean start with any version of Windows from time to time, but not that great when you are compelled to do it all by something not working properly. It must be something local to your machine/software combination or I would expect there to be more reports of this particular error happening; I'm not blaming or finger-pointing, just trying to work out what could be going on there.

Sorry I couldn't assist more; I am reasonably certain that if I had the machine for a day or so at my repair workshop I could find a resolve one way or the other.
