Now have 2011 installed, it it safe to remove 2010

Post by MikeyB »

Before I go ahead and do this, just want to check.

Now I've got 2011 setup & configured how I like, is it safe to uninstall 2010? Will ALL my settings be kept?

I ask as I had problems when I uninstalled 2011 beta 3, it wiped my settings from 2010 http://forums.blumentals.net/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5148

Hi MikeyB

I threw caution to the wind and uninstalled WeBuilder 2010 intending to stick with the just-installed 2011. Alas, all settings and customised bits and pieces disappeared and 2011 opened as if it was the first time I had ever used it, sans everything. Obviously the settings files and/or registry entries were being shared between the two, something that shouldn't happen in my opinion. I suppose one could export the 2010 settings as per the instructions given and import them into the new version, though my feeling is this should perhaps be introduced as an 'import old version settings' option by the installer.

Luckily I had done a registry backup beforehand and simply loaded the relevant hive into regedit, exported the Blumentals keys and merged/imported them into the right place and all was well again, but I shouldn't really have to do that and I wouldn't expect someone perhaps not as comfortable with registry editing as I am to do that either.

If you want further information about transferring the settings and uninstalling 2010 feel free to contact me.

Hi Dave,

I forgot all about this!

Totally agree with you there, I had this problem trying the 2011 beta, 2010 lost it's settings so I guessed it would do the same the other way around too, but don't remeber it being a problem with previous upgrades.

The settings should not be in the same locations for the different versions, it's asking for trouble, when 2011 is installed it should ask to import old settings, like you say.

The main thing for me is the syntax colours, I'll grab them out of the registry before hand.

Cheers,
Mike

The simplest way would be to export the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Karlis Blumentals key before uninstalling 2010 and import/merge once it is gone (making sure the new version isn't running when you do the import bit).

Hi,

When you uninstall old version you MUST keep the settings on your computer.
There is a message asking:
*************
Would you like to keep your settings.
You should keep your settings, if you plan on using any version of the program in future.
Yes No
*************
You just need to click on Yes, and all will be fine. No exports will be needed, and no colors will be lost.
Obviously the settings files and/or registry entries were being shared between the two, something that shouldn't happen in my opinion. I suppose one could export the 2010 settings as per the instructions given and import them into the new version, though my feeling is this should perhaps be introduced as an 'import old version settings' option by the installer.
Although this is a good suggestion, it is not easy to implement it, because of the internals of the editor. But I will write it down, so it can be considered for future.
Kind regards,

Hi Gatis

I didn't understand the meaning of the WB2010 version message correctly, which is why I uninstalled without saving any settings. If the warning message read as you posted here, I likely would have, however (in the 2010 version at least), the actual message is as shown in the image below. This implies to me that I should save only if I wanted to reinstall and use 2010 again - not 'any version'.

Of course, with this 'keep settings' feature in the uninstall routine there is no need to implement the option of importing settings during installation as I ignorantly suggested above; having this already in place makes working on such a feature a waste of development time.

Thanks.
