Preview focus preventing auto-complete from working properly

Post by davenz »

I'm not sure how everyone else uses WeBuilder, or gets on with using auto-complete, but this is starting to annoy me and I wonder how others put up with it.

I have the auto-complete feature enabled and set to 0 milliseconds, as I want it to appear as soon as I type a tag so I can choose from available options. I'm not sure why it would be set otherwise, but this is what I am asking I suppose.
I also use the preview view a lot, (either vertical or horizontal, it doesn't really matter) and I have that set to update as soon as possible after I make a change; again, if used, I see no point in sitting there waiting for many seconds for changes to be updated or worse still, like MS Expression Web, have to click in the preview window to update changes since last time I clicked. Just about all other HTML editors with preview have a true 'live' preview and one of the small things that has always needled me about WeBuilder is the way the preview works. Anyway, in previous versions this wasn't a big issue and I got use to it and put up with it. Now though, I type a tag name and the auto-complete dialogue appears, then almost immediately, the focus is robbed from the coding window due to the preview updating. This kills the auto-complete and I have to hit ctrl+space to get it back. I have had to use ctrl+space more times in the last week for this purpose than in the previous 2 years of using WeBuilder.

This all may be just the way I have the software set to use, so I don't know how anyone else uses or fares with it. Being a lame beginner coder I like to see what changes are made right away so I don't end up knee-deep in mistakes and have to keep going back to work my way out of it. All this extra key punching is disturbing my workflow and I am sad to have to say is making WeBuilder a real hassle to use lately; frustration is not something I am used to feeling when using this software. I thought it might be something to do with the cursor sync, however it happens no matter what control I preview with and with the cursor sync disabled.

All else aside, selfishly what I would like to see for the way I use WeBuilder is for the preview to be truly 'live' and completely separate from the coding Window (not physically, just in the code) so it doesn't grab focus at all until I choose to click there.

Overall, this latest version seems to be buggier than 2010. When preview is 'active', WeBuilder crashes on me about every 5 minutes. It brings up the crash dialogue and allows me to save what I'm doing (though ctrl+S every time a line of code goes in is habit now) and I just click the restart button in the crash dialogue to keep going. Again it spoils my workflow and creativity worrying about the tools I use, making using it not fun like it used to be. Turning preview off helps with the crashing, but if you've read this far you'll know I prefer to use it.I would rather not have cursor sync if these introduced bugs are related to this feature, though I do find it increasingly useful as I get used to it.

I have also noticed a few minor graphical glitches, such as my mouse cursor disappearing when clicking inside tags sometimes or tags (especially TD) not being paired/highlighted properly but I cannot replicate these issues so have not filed bug reports.

I am still a big fan, just a little disappointed things have happened this way. I have every confidence in things being fixed at some stage, so I'm not about to jump ship over it.

Anyone else have similar issues. or is it just me?

Cheers

Hi,
Anyway, in previous versions this wasn't a big issue and I got use to it and put up with it.
I think this is a bug, and I hope we will be able to fix this in one of the next updates.
I thought it might be something to do with the cursor sync, however it happens no matter what control I preview with and with the cursor sync disabled.
If you have disabled the cursor-preview synchronization, then it must be the same old behaviour you had before version 2010. I tried to reproduce the problem with sync feature turned off, but had no luck.
When preview is 'active', WeBuilder crashes on me about every 5 minutes
From what I could conclude from the bug reports so far, the problem is with connected with the latest version of Mozilla Control. Try to work some time with IE preview only, there are no issues then, right? But you will get the same problems in version 2010. Well that is what I could gather so far.. If you think this is something else, please save the bug-report and send it to our support email address separately (not directly to the debug email address).
I have also noticed a few minor graphical glitches, such as my mouse cursor disappearing when clicking inside tags sometimes or tags (especially TD) not being paired/highlighted properly but I cannot replicate these issues so have not filed bug reports.
If you see some pattern in issues you experience, please let us know.
Kind regards,
