WeBuilder Beta7 Stylesheet Prevew

Post by trishahdee »

This has been a little pet peeve of mine about WB that I've just learned to live with... I don't know if you would call it a "bug". It may just be the way it's supposed to work... anyway...

If I'm working on a style sheet, i.e., style.css, and I mistakenly click on preview, then WB creates a prev0~.htm file in the style.css folder. That's fine, I understand WB must need to create a html page someplace to show the styles.

What I don't like is this: I delete the prev0~.htm file but then it keeps getting recreated every time I save the style.css, even if I don't use preview again. The number of the file keeps counting up with each save.

The only way to stop this file is to close/reopen WB and not preview the style sheet again.

Like I said... It's probably not a bug... except if you count that fact that it bugs me :D I just wish there was some other solution other than closing WB. Maybe like have it created in the WB backup folder? That way it would be out of sight/out of mind.

Hi Trisha, this has been a few days already. Any luck yet on a fixed or at least a workaround on this?

I think these preview files should be deleted automatically (on WeBuilder exit maybe?). Are they created and remain there forever?

Currently, once the first one is created by previewing the style sheet, the only way to stop them is to close and reopen WeBuilder. Until then they are continually "updated" every time the style sheet is saved even if it was not previewed again and even if you delete the preview file. So, Alvars, until WeBuilder is closed the previews do indeed stay there "forever".

I use TotalCommander for FTP and I have my files sorted by date so the newest ones are on top. I find the preview file behavior annoying as it is now always on the top and it's number keeps ticking up with each save of the style sheet. I don't need preview files to be a part of my work files.

My suggestion would be to have these created in the WeBuilder temp file folder instead.

We are planning to improve CSS preview but we had to cut it from 2014 to make it in time.

According to my tests, the preview files get deleted as soon as I close the CSS file tab. Having the file there during the edit phase might be a little annoying, but it's only for now, until we get a chance to improve the feature.

You are correct, closing the style sheet tab will also stop the preview.

In my case, I usually have files from two or three (or more) sites open in WB at any one time. I use the style.css tabs as "separators" between the different groups of site files. This way I can click on the style sheet tabs and can tell by the first lines which site's files are to the right of it. To close and open a style sheet tab also means moving it back through all the open tabs to reposition it again as a "separator" so... for me, closing and opening WB is actually less of a "thing".

And like I said when I began this thread... this is more of a "it bugs me" thing then an ISSUE as it only happens when I mistakenly preview a style sheet. I'm glad it's on your To-Do list. I can wait :D
