Open FTP site toolbar button

Post by mikep »

A seemingly simple feature that would save me a significant amount of time would be the ability to create a toolbar button that will open a particular FTP site with a single click. In other words, you should be able to create multiple buttons, one for each site. If you have 20 or 30 FTP sites, this might not be of much use, but for those of us with only a few that we use regularly, this would save time.

Another way you could implement this would be as a pop-up menu. If you simply click on the menu, it open the most recently accessed site. If you instead click on the pop-up triangle, you get a list of either your FTP sites, or your recently accessed directories (The latter would be more helpful to me-- possibly this would be best to be configurable?)

BTW, I wanted to compliment you on how wonderful this software is. I just discovered it yesterday & I'm just blown away by how well thought out it is. Beats most of the commercial software I've been trying hands down.

Why would you want to open an FTP site? To edit its contents? Thats what the project section is for.
Or am I being thick as usual?

Projects do seem to fit the bill, though I'm not quite certain yet whether I think they're ideal or not. The biggest limitation seems to be that the project must reside on your hard drive. The project that I'm currently working on was only on my server, so it wouldn't work as a project. Of course that was easily enough fixed by downloading the files, but that's not always something I would want to do. If I'm just editing a few random files on the server, just opneing them from FTP is an easier solution. I can do that just fine with the current tools, but streamlining them just a tiny bit would be nice.

But if its just a few random files on an FTP server, you've the FTP tab in the File Explorer. You can set up multiple entries to the same server but for different directories, if you don't want to keep navigating through directory trees.

It seems a lot of effort to create something which WeBuilder already does.

Actually, you're right. The FTP explorer seems to fulfill my needs very nicely. I just hadn't found that feature yet. Man this software rocks.
