Call to OS function failed

Post by chrisjlocke »

Just tried running WeBuilder 2005 and 2006 in Win 98, and it didn't seem that happy:

Admittedly they're in a virtual machine, but that shouldn't make that much difference - its a real machine as far as WeBuilder should be concerned.

How compatible is WeBuilder with Win98? Are there any known issues?

The errors seem to start when the autocomplete pops up - when I tried to select "background-image" I got a stack overflow!!

Will try with VMWare on Monday...

Chris,

Just tried WeBuilder on the Windows 98 boot of our testing laptop here, so it's a "real" 98 boot!

Got the same stack overflow error with Auto Complete, but couldn't get the call to an OS function error as Win 98 would BSOD after the stack overflow error.

So doesn't look like it's your VM causing the problems.

Thanks for that - useful to know!
Tried cancelling the auto complete, and got the OS call failure about 20secs after, when doing 'nothing'. Hmm...

It's strange, because I test the previous version of WeBuilder (7.2.0.68) on Win98 when looking into the Access Violation problem, but it never crashed with the OS function or Stack overflow error during that time, but does it every time now...

Not that I'm too worried about running it on 98!

We are thinking about dropping the Win 98 support at all in 2007. Will anybody feel hurt about this?

Windows Vista is comming out very soon and it is really difficult to support so wide range of systems. What do you think?

Its a shame, as Win98 isn't as bloated as 2000 or XP. For quick test machines, they're perfect. Knackered old PII or P3 machines can still quite happily run '98, and useful for the 'I just want to email a couple of people once a week' type people. Its a shame software is moving on so fast and not being able to support older machines. Aah, guess thats progress.

Believe me, I hate it too. And now with Vista we will have to have newer/faster PCs as well. And as a developer I will be forcced to have at least one Vista computer for testing purposes - can't just stay with XP. Unfortunately you have to play by their rules otherwise you will be out of business within 3 years or so.
