Shutdown question

Post by brow416 »

Hi. I have HTMLPad Pro 2004. I am considering upgrading to 2006 but first have a question. In 2004 when I shutdown Windows XP, it always stops the shutdown process if HTMLPad Pro 2004 is running. If I quit 2004 first, shutdown proceeds normally.

My question is whether this issue has been fixed in the 2006 version.

Thanks!

So why not just close HTML Pad before shutting down Windows XP? You ought to close all running programs before shutting down anyway. I wouldn't have thought that it was an issue with HTML Pad.

if there are no unsaved files the program should close just fine. Otherwise the windows xp "wait for program to terminate" screen should pop-up and terminate the program.

Hello Karlis,

I couldn't tell with your reply whether you are talking about the 2004 or 2006 version. With the 2004 Pro version, I can start HTMLPad, have no files open, attempt to shutdown XP, and it will stop the shutdown. It doesn't matter whether I have unsaved files or not - the behavior is always the same Are you saying this behavior has been fixed with 2006?

I know that other programs (MS Word, for example) will shut down gracefully if there are no changed documents, or they will prompt to ask if changes need to be saved. This standard behavior is what I am hoping HTMLPad Pro 2006 accomplishes, and I'd like to confirm before I upgrade.

Your product is great otherwise. This one thing, though, is a pet peeve of mine - kinda like fingernails scratching across a chalkboard. It may not bother the majority of your users, but it's a frequent irritation to me. So I'm willing to pay for an upgrade solely to alleviate this irritation - because the 2004 product fulfills my needs otherwise. If the problem isn't fixed, then there is no need for me to upgrade.

Thanks again for your reply!

This 'glitch' is also in WeBuilder 2006 (and so in the other products that use the same engine).
And the dev_alpha of 2007.

I haven't tested it with Win 2000 yet, to see if its just XP causing the issue.

What's wrong with closing the application before shutdown?

Its just a nice lazy feature when you've oodles of applications open to just close Windows. You shouldn't have to close each application before closing Windows.
When I want to go home, I just want to shut the machine down and go - not have to start closing every application down manually.

As I said - just lazyness! ;)

Isn't there a keyboard shortcut for closing all open programs - I'm sure that I've used one in the dim distant past?

This is exactly my feeling. I have oodles of programs open, and HTMLPad Pro is the only piece of software that doesn't behave in the standard way when Windows is shut down. All of the MS products do it correctly. Adobe Acrobat does too. So does FireFox and Opera. Quicken. TaxCut. WordPerfect Suite. Paint Shop. Tax Cut. FileZilla. They, and many others, all do it correctly.

Like Chris said, I just want to close Windows and go home...

So it appears that the 2006 version doesn't work correctly either. Thanks all for helping me figure this out before upgrading. Now I'm gonna have to spend time finding an alternative HTML editor (unfortunately).

ALT + F4 closes the current program. Windows key + M minimises all windows. There isn't a key combo which closes all programs (apart from the power button ;) )

Not necessarily. There may be an easy explanation, and something thats easily solved. The 2007 version is still in beta.

OK, I'll wait a little while to see if it's fixed. Please reply to this post when it's done, even if in the 2007 version. I really like the product and don't want to waste time looking for an alternative if I don't have to.
