export FTP sites for new computer

Post by sheilahoff »

I couldn't find a place to do this. Is there a way to move all my settings over to a new computer?

Thanks,
Sheila

Hi Sheila,

Welcome to the forum.

Tools>Export Settings will make a .reg file that you can use on a new computer. Just double click it on the new box and it will import into your registry (or you can manually import it via regedit).

Also, make a back up of your C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Application Data\Blumentals folder and place it in the same spot on the new machine. That will bring over your snippets, projects, keyboard shortcuts...

all of take <5 minutes.

Unfortunately this does not include FTP and SQL (yeah I know, it is not good, but we are working on this).

To move FTP and SQL, you should export to reg file the following key (using regedit):
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Karlis Blumentals\Common\

and import it on the other computer bu double-clicking the reg file.
Karlis Blumentals
Blumentals Software

version 2005

Post by sheilahoff »

Oops...I neglected to mention I'm using 2005. I just went in to try to do this and I do NOT see a tools/export settings option. Am I just missing it or was this added post-2005? Is there a way to do this in the version I'm using?

Thanks,
Sheila

Karlis, I've never manually done a regedit export when moving machines and it always brought my FTP info with me via "export settings". Is it broken now in 2007?

Sheila, you'll need to actually go into the registery and export the key karlis mentioned above. I think 'export settings' was new to 2006. Start>run> type "regedit" without quotes. Once in there, go edit>find, then paste in the path from above (or just blumentals). select the key and go file>export. save it, copy it to a new machine, double click it on the new machine.
