WeBuilder icons missing from Win Explorer, File Explorer

Post by mikesp »

Hi,

I'm seeing a strange problem in that the WebBuilder icon is missing from all .php* files that I have associated with WebBuilder. The .php* files are correctly associated, as they are listed as a "WeBuilder Document", but no icon. When I double-click the .php* files, WeBuilder does indeed open. The icon is missing in both Windows Explorer and the WeBuilder File Explorer.

I have tried removing the association and re-adding it, but this still doesn't fix the problem.

In the Windows "Folder Options" dialog, where the association is assigned, the icon does not show up in the "extensions" column. However, it does appear in the "Details for PHP" extension box, in the "Opens with WeBuilder 2007" line.

I'm using Windows XP SP2, WeBuilder 8.31.

Any idea what's going on here?

Thanks,
-Mike

I've also had this problem periodically, but find it hard to pin down to any particular event. It seems to happen after updating/upgrading the software.

Yes, exactly. I think it happened when I upgraded to 8.3 (from 8.2). I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but still no icons.

I figured out how to fix this. Directions are below... use at your own risk!

1. Uninstall WeBuilder.
2. From Windows Explorer... Tools... Folder Options... File Types, delete all php file types.
3. Use regedit to view the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. Make sure all .php* file type Keys have been removed. If not, delete them.
4. Reinstall WeBuilder; select all the php file types for association; add any php file types you use but aren't in the list (e.g. .php5, etc).

That's all. Now the WeBuilder icons show up next to .php* files in both Windows Explorer and WebBuilder's File Explorer.

NOTE: My existing WeBuilder projects were deleted, so I had to add those back after reinstalling WeBuilder. Just be aware of this.

If you've upgraded the software, its more likely the ID for the icon has changed. You don't need to uninstall WeBuilder or delete keys from the registry.

When you originally tried to re-create the association, did you use the 'Change icon' button in the association dialog?

I have the same problem too in Windows XP Pro, any file types that are associated with WeBuilder have the standard "unknown type" icon.

No amount of fiddling with the "change icon" property for the file types make any difference, even if I change it to a Windows standard icon, the icon on the files will not change, always staying on the unknown type icon.

Also tried deleting/fixing the Windows icon cache, but nothing seems to fix this one, odd.

I've had exactly the same problem, and not just with PHP file associations. I'm glad others have reported this cos I thought it was just me.

I've found the only way to fix it is to uninstall WeBuilder and then reinstall, sometimes with a reboot in the middle.

I haven't found out exactly why this happens but I most often notice it after a Windows or Microsoft Update. There's a Microsoft XML Editor application within Office that I think gets updated from time to time that seems to throw the XML association certainly.

You might try changing the file associations to something like wordpad then back to WeBuilder.

It's so encouraging to find people having the same problems! I think Gareth hit the nail on the head with his theory that it is related to Windows updates and in particular Microsoft XML Editor within the Office suite. However, please note that although the following "fix" worked for me I cannot be certain that it hasn't had some other knock-on-effect.

I fixed it by going to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WeBuilder.Document and deleting the key, "ShellEx". After a restart all icon associations were fixed.
(FYI: If you expand this key you will find an "icon handler" reference to a hex key name, and if you follow this you will find a reference to the MS XML Editor.)

I hope that this helps other's who have become frustrated by this problem.
