Maybe I am losing something, but it seems that you can choose the encoding when saving to disk. You should implement these things:
- Configure default encoding for new files
- Choose encoding when creating new files
- Modify encoding of already opened files
- Choose encoding when saving to FTP (not so important if you implement the former)
- Show encoding in the status bar
Now, when I want to convert a FTP file to UTF-8, I must open it, save to disk with UTF-8 and then save to FTP.
Also, if I create a file and save directly to FTP, which encoding does it have?

When saving to FTP the encoding used is the one the file was last saved with, if it was never saved, then it is default - ANSI. Now I agree, a feature that allows to select default encoding and to switch encoding for already open file would be nice and we are planning to introduce them in one of future versions.
