HTMLPad 2006 - FTP and Preview
I have recently purchased this excellent program, but have two problems:
FTP: I like it (simple and integrated) but cannot upload pdf files that are used on my website. Of course htm and image files are no problem. I had to restore my old ftp program (Core ftp le) to upload pdfs. What am I missing? Do I have to have a separate ftp program?
Split screen editing of html: Very nice and works fine on small files. On long ones the delays, etc. make it almost unuseble. I have tried various delay settings. This seems to be an ineffective workaround and I could find nothing in the help file to explain it.
What can you advise?
Thanks, Henry[/b]

I presume by 'you can't upload PDFs' you mean that you've set up a project, and want to upload all files in that directory. By default, as WeBuilder is an editor, it will only display files you can edit - CSS files, HTM, PHP, etc. It can't edit PDF files, so you won't see those. Equally, you can't edit MP3 files, so it won't display those either.
Yes, you can either use a dedicated FTP program (which is the best idea - WeBuilder was never designed to be a full featured FTP client) or you can add all files to the project.
Click the 'Project' menu item, -> 'Manage projects' -> Select the project -> Edit -> Add '*.*' (without quotes) to the 'Files of type'

Or you could just add '*.pdf', but as I mention, you won't be able to add other file types.
When you mention a large HTML file, how many lines, approx?
I've just created an HTML file with 1500 H1 and P tags, so over 3000 lines. Don't notice any long delays while I'm typing in that - takes about a quarter of a sec to generate the preview - if that, so there is a bit of flickering, and the mouse changes cursor, but the editor still works.
Edit: Just went nuts and copied and pasted the contents a couple more times so 12000 lines - still fine.
Whats your PC spec? (especially your memory)

My PC spec: as you asked. W98SE in a very minimal, customised installation, 98Lite, etc. 512M ram, AMD Duron 1.6, No IE, no DirectX.
I presume the internal preview of HTMLPad uses the residual rendering engine from IE.
For a detailed description of this computer see

This computer is extremely fast and stable compared to a typical 98se, but I wouldn't be surprised if the HTMLPad update worked better in a more modern computer. I'll test it on a friend's XP.
Embarrassed about not seeing the pdf thing, but had to change some posted pdfs for a client in a hurry. I hoped to get quick help from this forum, and I did.

Viewing *.* files is a bit of a kludge, as there is potential for HTMLPad to open a PDF, which of course, you don't want to do.
If you've not got IE installed, it would be interesting to know how HTMLPad is previewing the HTML. It could be bits from IE4 (as thats what comes with 98). I presume you don't want to install IE6. The rendering engine has been improved over the versions, so you may get an improvement in that.

Thanks, Karlis,
I continue to be very impressed with this elegant editor. Preview update in quasi real time is a technical challenge in any editor. I just have to watch my typing in this mode. It's really minor to me, and very possibly a quirk of my system.
I am also impressed with the speed and quality of your technical support.
Kind regards,
Henry
