Questions from Long-term Homesite User

Post by RoyReed »

First of all let me say that WeBuilder is an excellent piece of software. I've been using HomeSite for over 8 years, have been a beta tester for it and latterly have been almost the only person giving help on the HS section of the MM forums. But I've just about given up on them since Adobe took over.

Anyway, I downloaded WeBuilder, tried it for a few days and liked it enough to buy a copy. But I have a few questions:

1 - If you drag an HTML file into the editor window it writes the relative URL. Is it possible that if you drag the file onto a piece of selected text that it writes a full <a> tag with the href attribute filled in?

2 - Is it possible to shift-select or ctrl-select files in the File Explorer and then right-click to select open? Or to right-click on a project folder and select 'Open All'. It won't do this on my PC.

3 - Is it possible to add characters to the Special Characters dialogue. I'd like to be able to add double and single quotes and one or two others.

4 - Is it possible to enter encoded characters from the keyboard so that (for instance) Alt-0233 becomes é rather than Ć©?

And I don't think this is possible at the moment, but it would be a good addition:

5 - Have different code colouring for certain HTML tags, particularly <form> and <table> elements.

If none of these are possible could they be considered for future versions.

And I think I've spotted one small problem. If you drag an image from the File Explorer to the edit window and the DOCTYPE is XHTML it adds the border="0" attribute. It shouldn't. It isn't part of the XHTML spec and isn't supported. It probably shouldn't do it with an HTML 4.01 DOCTYPE either as it's deprecated although still in the spec. It correctly doesn't add border="0" if you add an image via the 'Insert Image' dialogue whatever the DOCTYPE. Also in XHTML alt="" is a required not an optional attribute.

Sorry for the long list (I did do a search of the forum first) but I really am very impressed with this programme and would like to be able to start using it all the time and these things would be a great help for the way I work.

Hi Roy,
3 - Is it possible to add characters to the Special Characters dialogue. I'd like to be able to add double and single quotes and one or two others.
You can open up and manually edit "entities.ini" which is in C:\Program Files\WeBuilder 2006\data\

You can find more details here:

I second having #5 added as I use a lot of tables and forms. As an ex-Homesite user this is a feature I do miss when debugging large pages.

I "third" the request for implementation of #5!

The rest of the list wouldn't be "bad" things to have either.

[edit]
Ok, after a bit more use, #2 on Roy's list would be great! Having to jump to the full "Open" dialog for this is not very efficient.

As a potential new customer/user I'm concerned that the above questions have not been addressed by the developer(s) even tho they are a week old.
As a new user I'm wondering whether these will be considered as new features in an upcoming upgrade.

One thing I am going to be the most interested in is the attention to the users by the devs. I see a lot of posts that go unanswered or answered incompletely by other users.

How active are the developers in this forum? Why are there so many ignored posts?

Thanks

If you look at past threads, you'll notice Karlis is in these boards extremely frequently (also proved by his 1393 postcount). However, programming isn't his full-time occupation, and he has a life to live too! Answering queries in this board can also take up a lot of time, so it can't be done all that regulary.

Please also be aware that its the holiday season, so he may be away on vacation.

FWIW, Karlis hasn't posted anywhere in the forum since 29 July according to a search for posts by him.

I'm interested see see answers to these queries too. I'm a user of TopStyle (and prior to that, HomeSite for at least as long as Roy) looking around for a new editor since development seems to have been abandoned after Nick Bradbury sold out to NewsGator.

Bitdaf, I know what you mean. I had a discussion here back in May regarding a feature you've recently asked for but there was no resolution on it. Have a look:

http://forums.blumentals.net/viewtopic.php?t=1162

It looks simply like I've been told that the feature is in there and it works and that's that. I'm not casting aspersions on anyone, just saying that it left me more confused than enlightened.

Karlis is probably in Holidays as it is August...

Anyway, I was a Topstyle user too and think that WeBuilder is quite superior and in the last two years have been implemented a lot!
