Strange Page-Up problem

Post by MikeyB »

Hi,

Just come across a strange problem.

I'm editing an XML file (actually a .kml file for Google Earth, but it's basically an XML file)

When I have word wrap on, and get to the last line of the file, I cannot Page Up from there, pressing Page Up does nothing.
In fact, if I move up a few lines using the up arrow key or scroll with the mouse, pressing Page Up returns to the last line of the file.

Only way that seems to make Page Up work again, is to return to the 1st line of the file, then it works again till I get to last line again.

As I say, this is only with Word Wrap on.

The file is 1232 lines long and 63KB.
I can send it in to see if anyone else has the same problem.

Cheers
Mike

This is a known problem and will be corrected in one of the nearest updates.

Nice one Karlis,

It's not a big problem as I only just come across it, and it's hardly a show-stopper!
Thought my keyboard was going a bit crazy at first!

Cheers

Hi, I'd thought I'd mention that I tried to edit a KML file recently and my laptop froze.
More support for KML editing would be great, as I plan to add kml files to my new site. :)

Hi Max,

There is nothing special about a KML file, it's basically just an XML file with .KML instead of .XML
If you go into Options - Preferences - Document Types - XML you can add KML in as a known file extension and you will get XML code highlighting.

How big is the KML file you are trying to edit, I do know they can get pretty big!

Cheers,
Mike

Hi Mikey

re my KML file, its a zero size at the mo. I create sites as a hobby (I don't work in computers) so currently am looking for a time saving means of creating KML files. Either a 'KML files for Dummies' book  or a 'code generator' which does it for me. I actually wasted quite some time on Google Maps creating a 'map' and then clicking 'save as KML' before I realised that function didn't exist.

Failing that, I'll have to sit down and read the Google tutorial. Hopefully Karlis will update his web editor to add 'insert KML icon' etc etc :)

You CAN save a map as a KML. Click 'My Maps' and design your map as you like. You'll then see a 'KML' link. Just to the left of 'Print'. That lets you 'download' a KML file. You can 'import' a KML by uploading it to some webspace, then set that URL as the 'Search for address' location.

Alternatively, get Google Earth. Its the same as Google Maps, but standalone version. Well, sort of. You can do more with it.

There are loads of guides out there about the KML file structure. KMZ files are KML files, but simply zipped up.

You can create a simple KML file, then use that as a template. Or a snippet. WeBuilder is very flexible. I started a 'Google Earth Location Database' on my website a couple of years ago to host KML files but it didn't really take off. Some people still use it. I tried to create a new version on my CMS powered site, but based on the streetmap version of Google Maps - but again, those locations have dried up.

Download loads of KMZ files from my site!
