Ftp connections and password

Post by scandog »

Hi,

I have just started moving my system to Vista, and have managed to more most of my webuilder stuff. The problem I am having is with the FTP settings.

I have 20 or more ftp sites setup under browse FTP and was wondering where the files are to move them over to the new server. Some of the sites I don't have the passwords any more. I could get them but with some difficulty.

Thanks

This is really a good question - when I built up a new pc in our office, I often asked this question to myself too. It would be very interesting to know, where this information is stored. In the application data folder, I've found nothing special, which could be any data file for the ftp settings.

Nevertheless, I have a little link for you. There you find some tools, which can unhide the asterisk password fields of the most programs ... RapidPHP too.

http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/down ... risk_info/

I've tried the "Nucleus Kernel Password Unmask 1.0" (the third from the top) - it's a little cool tool, which needs no install - and if it's running, every password field gets unhide.

Good luck ;)

I was wondering if any attention had been paid to this. I've ditched my PC for a shiny laptop and was quite bummed when none of my ftp settings transferred.

Yes, currently the FTP settings are not transferred automatically, however you can export/import the registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Karlis Blumentals\Common\FtpExt\6.0

If you gave them access to your registry...

Not under normal circumstances, no.

Passwords are crypted (unusable) in the registry.

Yeah, but saving passwords as normal text isn't that secure ... for example at multiuser machines. Maybe you should think about a conf or ini file, where those details are stored and maybe you should think about an self-programmed encryption method, so that you can decrypt the passwords from the ini file. With those ini files RapidPHP or whatever becomes more portable - or easier to synchronise, if you use the application on more than one machine (work and home ...).

Just think about it - Thx 8)

Evil- The passwords aren't saved as normal text and are encrypted - even if you export the registry file you still can't 'decrypt' them. Looks secure enough to me...

 sorry, just realized that ... but when i was looking at some entries some days ago, i thought they were not encrypted - because they looked quite equal ...

but maybe just a fluke

i apologize for any inconvenience
