Where do you host your website?

Post by Karlis »

I'm considering opening a mirror site in United States, so far the candidates are HostICan, HostGator, 1and1.

Have any experiences to share?

my personal sites are on dreamhost. a discount for you and a bonus for me via this dreamhost link. ;) They're cheap and fast enough. tons of space/bandwidth, free subdomains, host multiple domains in the same account no extra charge...

for clients where quality is really really important, media temple is the best.

Syrupcore- I've heard terrible things about their [dreamhost] customer support. How have you found them?
They seem cheap, but sometimes a bit *too* cheap...

the support is great actually. what's bad is that once a year or so, things seem to explode for two days and everything dies. If you're trying to get support then, I bet it sucks. As well it should really - the tech team should be focused on fixing the problem, not answering emails. But yeah, in general it's <24 hours.

they have a status blog (http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/) and are generally super up front about what's going on. They also come right out and say they are 'overselling'. There's a great post on their blog about how the hosting industry is basically built on overselling and there's no way to do it without overselling (if your price is to remain competitive). Sh*t, I just appreciated that they came out and said it.

Karlis.

For High Q I use insiderhosting.com. For the rest hostgator

Support in both are great (response less than 1 hr if is urgent). hostgator has an issue: emails are kind of restricted.

I am with insiderhosting for about 4 years now after jumping around several times. I am with hostgator for about a year now.

Hi everyone,

I'm just in the process of moving my clients sites to OCS solutions.
( They provide Ruby-on-Rails which I'm getting into... )

Could not say enough about how impressed I am with their support...

cheers, Dave Porter

I'm looking at hostican.com or hostgator.com , all I really need is a speedy *mirror* location for files. I tested both of them, speed is ok.

insiderhosting.com looks interesting, but there is no mention of what kind of facilities do they ahve and where are they located.

I can not recommend Mediatemple highly enough. Awesome bandwidth, disk space, features and customer service (emails answered within 5-10 minutes usually!). Fantastic value for money too... - definitely check them out.

Hi,

I've not heard of Mediatemple before, so can't really comment on them.

But here on our fast connection at work (in the UK) the Mediatemple homepage takes at least 12 seconds to load, so not what I'd fast.

Not currently having any speed issues with other sites in the US.

Just my experience.

Hello,

Just tried Mediatemple again, and the two sites that syrupcore posted, tested each 3 times.

Oddly enough, they all take about 12 seconds to load, both on the company connection, and our test ASDL connection.

Just done some tracert to those domains, and they all have completely different routing from this connection.

DO consider this alternative. http://www.hostko.co.uk/

I know this data center isn't located in the US, BUT:
- it's a state-of-the art data center located in the middle of European net grid with
- great ping times from virtually everywhere on this planet
- UNMETERED bandwidth
- GREAT costumer service
- almost no downtime
- fast servers
- did I mention unmetered bandwidth?? :)

I really have only positive experience in past 3 years with those guys (I have several sites, three of them are relatively big).
to-do: full-screen feature
