Attempting to save a file after previewing in Firefox fails

Post by skube »

OK, I am testing out HTMLPad as an alternative to Homesite. One of the ways I like to work on files is by loading the file into Firefox, make edits. save and then reload the browser page. HTMLPad will not let me re-save once loaded into Firefox. I get the following error:

Error
---------------------------
The file can not be saved with the specified name.
Ensure that the file is not Read-Only or specify different filename.
---------------------------

The only way to save the file at this point is to quit Firefox. Obviously, this a big downer for me and something Homesite never complained about. Yes, I could use HTMLPad's built-in preview, but I like having access to Firefox's Add-ons such as Firebug for debugging.

Is there something I'm missing or is this workflow not possible with HTMLPad?
thanks!

OK, nevermind. Seems not to be doing it any more. Must have been some other process.

Sorry for the waste of bandwidth.

There was another thread about this.

In any lockup case, you may want to try this program which will help you see who has locked the file:

Actually HTMLPad is complaining again.

Yes, using the unlocker program you suggest does indeed tell me Firefox has locked the file. My issue is that I never experienced this with Homesite. This leads me to believe HTMLPad is more thorough when checking to see if it can overwrite a file.

Actually, I've discovered that HTMLPad is not able to overwrite the file only when Firefox encounters a JS error. As a result, Unlocker shows Firefox holding the lock.

This seems to be a known FireFix bug and has been reported. No reaction from mozilla, yet.

HTMLPad does not allow to write the file because it honors the locked status that other applications put on the files, because it may cause data loss. In Windows a locked file means that some other program is doeing some important stuff on this file right now and would not like other programs to mess with the file at that moment. Obviously FF forgets to unlock the file.
