Webuilder 2007 uninstall wiped my 2008 settings

Post by erodri »

Ok so I was doing some cleanup in my XP machine.

I had both Webuilder 2007 and Webuilder 2008 installed and since I hadn't touched 2007 in months I figured I could uninstall it.

Problem is, after uninstalling 2007, my 2008 settings have been totally wiped out.
When I ran 2008 after uninstalling 2007, the wizard started up and I canceled it.
Now in 2008 all the preferences have been reset to default and, what's worse, my carefully setup list of maybe a hundred projects is empty.

Is there any way to recover it? Maybe a filename which I can try to undelete before I touch anything.

You could try and recover what was in the %APPDATA%\Blumentals\ folder, and perhaps system restore to get the registry information back?
Karlis wrote:No, it is not safe to uninstall previous versions. Due to our lack of development force we have not managed to produce very smart setup yet (work in progress), so I will disclose the secrets of manual uninstall.

1) Delete WeBuilder 2007/2008 folders. It is safe to do so.
2) Delete WeBuilder 2007/2008 shortcuts from start menu and desktop.

The rest of the files kept in windows application data and registry are actually shared between versions, so you can just leave them and not worry about parts left.

Thanks for the help, I just managed to recover the %APPDATA%\Blumentals\ folder from a recent backup.
It didn't help with the program settings but at least I got the project list back, which was the most important thing for me.

Thanks also for quoting that warning from Karlis, I had not seen it before. Still I find that it's a very bad uninstaller behavior.
If it's not safe to delete the %APPDATA%\Blumentals\ folder and the registry stuff, why doesn't it simply leave it alone, as most other programs do?

Or at least when the uninstaller is run, it should WARN the user that it will wipe all settings. I don't think that all Webuilder users actively visit the support forums and others may have missed that post like I did.

As an UI expert I can say that you are completely 100% right and we will be working to improve this. Also let me apologize foe the loss of your settings. May I recommend that you do "Settings Export..." procedure at least once a while so that in case something crashes or goes wrong - you can get all settings back.
